I write this diary entry in a somewhat abnormal conditions – sitting on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Bernardin. Huge crowd and noise surround me. There’s a thousand people at Sempl, and there’s simply no place to retreat to and have some peace and silence you need to write. I’m thinking of going to my room, and writing the diary in peace and quiet. But no. I decide to stay here on the terrace, because here, in this crowd, I can best feel the heartbeat of Sempl, and that’s what I want to write about.
A girl just said to her friend: Sempl is fine, cool, right? Marjan Novak, chief editor of Marketing Magazine, co-organizer of the conference, approached me. I asked for impressions, and he said: “The greatest compliment for Sempl is that Mitja Milavec from Luna and Mare Vičić from Futura are here. They haven’t been in a lecture for years, and now they are sitting in the hall and listening to a lecture, and they say they are having a great time.” And it truly is. Sempl is a great conference. This is my first time here, and from now on I will not miss out a single year. This many people from the entire region, and this much good energy, I have never seen in one place.
In the early afternoon I received the list of the winning campaigns. I promised that we would not release it before 22.00 hours. I believe you’ve all received it last night as Breaking News. Excellent decisions by the jury! I know all the award-winning campaigns. Well-deserved awards went to the entire region. A big surprise is the gold for Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was won by the agency Via Media for the excellent campaign Museum of Public Procurement. Although I was not supposed to, I sent congratulations to Vesna Beganović from Via Media. I also congratulated Iva Balent and Damir Ciglar for yet another gold this year for Jana. UM Belgrade also picked up the gold accolade with their work for Coca-Cola.
The absolute champion of this year’s Sempl is the agency Luna with the campaign Duel for Laško beer. Congratulations to Janez Rakušček and his team.
Now I’m going to listen to the afternoon part of the program, and get ready for the gala awards ceremony tonight.
On my way to Portorož I received mail from Zagreb printing house Printera, informing me that the book The Best of Creative Directors will go to press on Monday, 5 December, and will be completed on Friday, 16 December. Excellent! I stopped by in Ljubljana for a meeting with Žare Kerin and his team who are working on the book. We went through the 70% of the book that’s already prepared for print. It looks fantastic. There’s still work to do and we arranged a schedule when and what should be done, so that everything would be finished on time. I’m very excited.
Ivan Stanković sent us a great article about how he was deceived by Goran Bregović. We will publish it on Monday.
I confirmed to Milica Marković from Direct Media Belgrade that I will be coming to Belgrade for the celebration of their 15th birthday next Friday.
Via mail from Portorož, I agreed with Branka Conić the final details of the panel which I will moderate next weekend in Belgrade, at the PRilika conference, organized by the Serbian Public Relations Association.
This entire morning I was in contact with Mersel and Amir about the campaign for the book The Best of CDs, which should start on Monday.
I also had a very important coffee at Sempl with Mitja Tuškej. The book No Friends, No Brands which I translated from Slovenian for the regional market is already in print. Regional publisher of the book is Media Marketing. The book was a hit in Slovenia, and will probably have the same success in the region. I received news that the DM Belgrade will order 700 copies to give as their New Year’s gift. Excellent! Mitja and I agree to print 1,200 copies because there’s already a lot of orders.
Today came a lot of news. I just forward them all to Adnan. My God how beautiful this is. News arrive, and I just forward them further.
I wrote everything here in a little confusing manner, but given the conditions and excitement in which I was writing, it’s good that I managed to write anything at all.
Best regards to all from Portorož.
