The biggest developers conference in South East Europe has gathered more than 1,500 visitors from all over the world in Split. Speakers come from Microsoft, Skype, Heroku, BitBucket, DigitalOcean, Autodesk, Five, Toptal and many other successful IT companies.
The event was opened by Zlatko Ževrnja, Mayor of Split-Dalmatia County, who welcomed all visitors. He stressed that the last five years Split-Dalmatia County has helped in organization of the Shift Conference and that even more needs to be done on the popularization and development of the IT sector and science.
“In our county, this sector employs more than 2,500 people, and these companies have achieved more than 200 million HRK in profit. We have really great people and I believe that this branch of the economy can be further improved. I thank the organizers of Shift Conference for promoting local community, IT entrepreneurship and branding of Split as an IT destination,” said Ževrnja.
Ivan Burazin, the main organizer of the event, thanked everyone for coming and recalled previous editions of the conference.
“Each year Shift brings something new. We are trying to improve and be innovative. We’ve thought about how to spice up this year’s conference and I believe we have succeeded. I am very grateful to everyone who participated in the organization. I have to admit that this is the best edition of the Shift Conference so far, and I am very proud of my people,” said Burazin and continued, “I hope you will enjoy all that we have prepared for you, and I hope to see you next year at an even greater and better Shift Conference.”
The first speaker of this year’s Shift conference was Christian Heilmann from Microsoft. With more than 20 years of experience working in web technologies for the largest IT companies, Christian is known as a great developer, speaker and author among IT professionals. In his lecture, he talked about artificial intelligence, robots and new technologies such as Google DeepMind AI which reads lips better than professionals can.
Luka Abrus from the agency Five, which is also the main sponsor of the Conference, gave an interesting lecture on mobile apps and demonstrated their platform Shoutem. “What we want is to stop people creating apps from scratch, and that is exactly what our app allows. Shoutem saves you time and money through a simple drag-and-drop interface,” explained Abrus.
Within the first conference day, we should definitely note Cyrille Fauvel from Autodesk and Ike DeLorenzo from Heroku. Cyrille talked about augmented reality and its implementation in everyday life, while Ike gave advice for automated, successful project delivery.
In addition to interesting lectures, this year visitors have the opportunity to enjoy watching robots cook, PES competition, foosball, cocktail master, DJ and practical workshops. Also, visitors can test an impressive set of virtual and augmented reality gadgets – the Microsoft HoloLens worth $3,000, as well as HTC Vivo and Samsung Gear VR headsets. Another novelty this year is the Area 55, the second stage which is parallel to the main event and hosts technical lectures and workshops.
Today, visitors will listen to a dozen more IT professionals, and can participate in many workshops, entertainment content, games, food, drinks and interesting virtual devices.
