A three year global campaign (2016-2018) titled “We Can. I Can.” was launched amid the World Cancer Day, which Croatia joined with a national level campaign under the name “Talking hands”.

The message of the campaign, “We Can. I Can.” is based on the idea that every institution, community and every individual can contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality from cancer. The campaign aims to raise public awareness about cancer, help prevention of this disease, early diagnosis and treatment, as well as care for patients. The conference highlighted the need to adopt and implement a comprehensive national plan of fight against cancer, since the incidence and mortality of malignancies in Croatia continues to increase, as opposed to other EU member states. According to the Croatian Institute for Public Health, each year 21,434 people are diagnosed with cancer in Croatia, and 13,939 die, that is 38 people die from cancer each day.

The idea of the national campaign is to join the global effort to spread the “We Can. I Can.” message, and to do something for prevention, early detection and improved treatment, as well as comprehensive care for patients. This is a call for everyone to get involved, because any action counts and we can all do something.

The national public health campaign in Croatia will be implemented at two levels, the electronic level in social networks and web sites of the campaign, and through public promotions in government, health care and academic institutions, and in the four major regional centers of Croatia.

Additional activity that will refresh the concept of the campaign are the themed e-postcards of the Croatian Post, by which you send your message to the physical address of the selected person in the form of a postcard with personalized photo and message, which is the contribution of the Croatian Post which has recognized the need to join the campaign.

You can show support to the national campaign by writing messages on your hands and sending them at www.mi-mozemo-ja-mogu.hr or #MiMožemoJaMogu, and at www.worldcancerday.org.
