Selection of a holiday destination for a small business owner is not actually that. Vacation is something that employees need. Owners of small companies only change their working environment while on vacation. This of course may sound like a lament, but the “feeling” that things around you happen mainly by your will, represents more than a compensation for the burden of the constant presence in the company. It is, of course, just a feeling. But it is the essence. It is what shapes that what remains after the holidays. A short story.
Selecting a temporary “working environment” depends on other participants. For us, this is relatively straightforward. My husband says that as long as he is alive, he is on vacation, wherever that is.
For the son, the important thing is separation from the electronic devices, which, in his case, are high waves for surfing. At that, it is interesting to observe one’s own fear at a symbolic departure and return. The fear that one day he will not be back. For me, that’s a lot of traveler’s (adventurous) adrenaline.
As the saying goes: a book that is not worth to read it twice, is not worth to read it even once. It’s the same with our choice of holiday location. After repeatedly testing Bali and Phuket, this year we decided for Phuket.
A couple of years ago, we visited the restaurant Sardine in Bali. It is managed by Pika, who succeeded in having a full restaurant throughout 12 months. Back then, I amazedly watched at the satisfied guests, and through a glass wall the kitchen, with over ten hard-working chefs and their assistants. I commended the owner. She simply replied: Yes, we are as ducks, on the surface we are elegant and quiet, but under the water we rush to get somewhere and, above all, to survive. This description of the hospitality business often reminds me of our own industry.
At Phuket we visit the Leonardo Da Vinci. Restaurant is led by Maja Križmančič, a friend who spent almost twenty years as the executive director of operations at hotels on the Slovenian coast. If you happen to be thirsty for Radenska water on this Thai island, with bubbles or without them, I suggest you go to this restaurant. Excellent food is supplemented by wines Polič. All this on a warm tropical night had taken us both almost home. But sometimes it’s also nice to enjoy excellent Asian food.
The conclusion of our family is therefore: when we want pizza or pasta, we go to an Italian restaurant; when we want local food, we stop at local restaurants and bistros. And when we simply wish to enjoy home cuisine, we ask around where we can find a restaurant run by someone from hour motherland.
Butterflies
This year at Phuket I was surprised by butterflies. Countless butterflies, of all colors and sizes. Even in childhood, when we were rolling on the grass without the widespread fear of bites and stings of all kinds of insects and ticks, I don’t remember I’ve seen such butterflies. Simple magical. They come in the morning and by early afternoon they fly away. And all the while they create a scenery that you can hardly imagine.

With good air connections you can arrive at Phuket in 17 hours. I recommend via Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
Lunch for three people in the local restaurants is between 10 and 15 euros, along with water and a couple of beers. Massages are between 8 and 17 euros for one hour.
