The global evaluating of wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot called “Emotions from the World: Merlot and Cabernet Together” (“Emozioni dal mondo: Merlot e Cabernet insieme”) is held every year in October in the Italian city of Bergamo. This is an evaluation to which many Croatian manufacturers apply, who have in their portfolio the black varieties because the rewards from Bergamo are appreciated both among the professionals and among consumers.

Vina Belje participate at the evaluation of Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots each year, because Baranja has excellent terroir for these two varieties, which in Belje vineyards give wines with numerous international awards and gold medals.

After the Cabernet Sauvignon of Vina Belje, 2009 vintage, won a gold medal and the title of best red wine from Croatia at this year’s Mundus Vini, new awards for Belje’s red wines come from Bergamo. Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from 2011 won gold medals, while Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot was declared the best wine from Croatia at this review.

According to Suzana Zovko, the main enologists of Vina Belje: “Although Belje is known for its superb Riesling, we also have great, world-award-winning red wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We are at the very top among Croatian producers of these varieties as evidenced by our awards in Bergamo in the last five years.”

Baranja and Croatian Danube region are notable for their terroir and the landscape, which brought this region increasingly frequent comparisons with the prestigious French region of Bordeaux. New gold medals for Vina Belje is another confirmation of the great potential of Baranja and the Croatian Danube region in the production of exceptional and authentic wines that delight the world’s connoisseurs.
