This Wednesday, Samsung unveiled their new Galaxy Note 8 which has the daunting task of suppressing the debacle with last year’s Galaxy Note 7, whose batteries tended to explode, and face Apple’s soon-to-be-released iPhone 8.

Samsung started the unveiling in New York with a reference to last year’s Note 7. “None of us will ever forget what happened last year. I know I won’t, but I will never forget how millions of dedicated, loyal users stayed with us,” said DJ Koh, president of Samsung’s mobile communications business, adding “Let me express my deepest gratitude to the incredible Note community around the world.”
Planetary recall of Note 7 cost Samsung billions of dollars in lost profits and undermined the credibility of this South Korean giant, who had to apologize and delay the launch of the Galaxy S8. The company’s latest financial results, released at the end of July, are soothing however, with a 89 percent jump in net profit of close to $10 billion in the second quarter, thanks to the demand for memory chips and the rise in sales of mobile devices.
The Note 8 released on Wednesday brings some improvements to the previous model, most notably a bigger screen, dual camera and a stronger version that has the ability to switch to a keyboard for some tasks. The new phablet will be available to buy on 15 September, said the world’s leading smartphone maker, but did not reveal the price of the device.
