To promote its Surface Pro 4 in Sweden, Microsoft commissioned a composer to create a “symphony” based on the sounds of Stockholm as he walked around the city using the tablet and pen.
Agency JMW equipped Eirik Roland, with a Surface Pro 4 and asked him to walk around Stockholm while collecting sounds and writing down music inspired by the different noises heard in the city. They range from the noises of the subway, church bells and wind on water to a stone skimming across a frozen lake. Using the Windows 10 application StaffPad, Roland was able to write down notations with the Surface pen. The handwritten music was then automatically converted to a typeset score, which can be played back, edited, printed and shared.
You can listen to the finished symphony below.
