It’s no wonder that the American Super Bowl each year yields some of the best ads of the year, and the huge budgets invested into the ads for this event play no small part in that. So this teaser for the AFC Championship for CBS featuring John Malkovich went on to mock that exact spirit of spending big for the big game, and the ironic approach makes it absolutely stellar.
In the spot, Malkovich is reading a script for a teaser for the game, in a symphony hall of all places, noting the ridiculousness and overexaggeration of it. He then goes to confront the director of the spot, which ends up with him still giving an epic speech followed by a symphonic orchestra… all for a football game.
The teaser was conceived by CBS Sports creative director Pete Radovich and was shot just days before the game at the New England Conservatory with musicians overseen by famed conductor, Helmut VonLichten.
CBS promoted the teaser on its social media channels, including Twitter and Facebook.
