On Saturday, 14 January at Lauba – House for People and Art in Zagreb, the awards of the International exhibition of graphic design and visual communications Zgraf 12 were presented. One of the awards – the AICA Award – was awarded by the independent jury of the Croatian Section of the International Association of Art Critics AICA, composed of Marko Golub, Boris Greiner and Sandra Križić Roban. The award went to designer Rafaela Dražić for the book New Art for a New Society: Your Presence is Requested, published by Muzeum Wspolczesna Wroclaw and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.
Explaining the reasons for this decision, the jury noted:
“The work we are awarding is in that part of the Zgraf selection whose quality for years now is at a very high level and therefore the criteria of its evaluation are expectedly strict. Looking at the exhibition before us, it seems important to point out that publishing, books and publications are proving to be an area in which graphic designers most effectively and markedly demonstrate their knowledge, skills, sense of composition, the ratio of the image and the text, the material of the printed media, sensibility for the understanding and interpretation of visual content that was at their disposal. And ultimately, the understanding of those for whom the book, as unusually intimate artifact of design, is intended – readers. Within such a strong production, in which the stakes are so high, where standards are so strict and the competition is so strong, it’s hard to pick just one work. The main reason why we selected the book/catalog New art for new society: Your presence is requested, designed by Rafaela Dražić, is the subtlety and wisdom behind every single decision in its design.”
