The competitive part of the Cannes Lions festival of creativity this year will see several changes in categories. Among other things, the category Print Lions will spread to include Publishing (Print & Publishing Lions), while the performance part from the category of internet and mobile has been taken out, and a new category created, Digital Craft.
According to Simon Cook, director of awards, Lions Festivals, expanding of the print category to Print & Publishing Lions is part of evolution, to recognise other forms of publishing, along with the best uses of press and interactive press.
“The Cyber and Mobile Lions juries have told us that with more and more UX and Craft focused entries, it is necessary to have experts in this field sitting on the jury. We’ve chosen to split it, so that this specialist area can have its own dedicated jury, which will also make the hugely labour intensive Cyber Lions judging much more manageable going forward,” said Terry Savage, chairman, Lions Festivals, commenting on the splitting out of Digital Craft.
Additionally, the Titanium & Integrated Lions are being separated, with Titanium and Integrated now being judged as standalone Lions, while the Design Lions will expand. Outdoor Lions will also grow to include Digital Outdoor section. The category of Branded Content & Entertainment Lions will be replaced by Entertainment Lions, while new Entertainment Lions for Music will be introduced due to music’s significant role within the entertainment sector.
Entries for Cannes Lions 2016 open on 21 January.
