A special new model of sneakers, designed by Adidas and inspired by the sears of the Berlin metro, has a built-in chip that will allow the owner to take public transport in Berlin throughout 2018.
A limited number of these attractive sneakers, 500 of them, made numerous fans of Adidas’s sports shoes to cue in front of the store in huge numbers and in freezing cold, waiting for 24 hours just to get their hands on a pair.
Because of snow and cold, many sought refuge during the night in cars, or in one of the nearby cafes in the Kreuzberg district, near one of the Overkill stores where sneakers can be bought, said spokeswoman Julian Kalitta. She also said that those most persistent were rewarded in the morning with a free breakfast.
Adidas’s sneakers with a characteristic pattern and an embedded microchip that allows one-year use of public transport throughout Berlin cost 180 euros. Several pairs are already offered on eBay, at a price of €600.
