Laundromat, Sink and Bus Become Gateways Into Amazon Music Audiobooks

Three films by the MakeMake studio use visual effects to show how listening changes the experience of routine tasks, and were created through a process in which the script, direction, editing and post-production were developed simultaneously.

The washing machine keeps spinning, the sink remains full of dishes, and the bus continues along its usual route. In the new campaign by Amazon Music, what changes is what listeners see around them when an audiobook captures their attention and a familiar space begins to follow the rules of the story they are listening to.

The series consists of the films Laundromat, Dishes and Bus Dragon, developed for the brand by the integrated studio MakeMake. Each begins in an environment that most people move through almost automatically, before the world of the audiobook gradually takes over. The fantastical elements do not open a separate storyline, but grow out of the laundromat, kitchen or public transport setting in which the listener already finds themselves. The campaign was presented on 24 July and is currently promoting the selection of audiobooks available through the app.

The characters do not physically go anywhere, so the films build the listening experience by changing their immediate reality. Visual effects are therefore not an addition after the story is completed, but a way of making the inner image created by a book visible. Strongly cinematic scenes enter entirely ordinary situations without interrupting the action that set them in motion, allowing the campaign to remain recognisable while being unpredictable enough to hold attention.

The new series was directed by Ben West, who found his starting point in spaces people move through without much thought, because their ordinariness creates a strong enough contrast with the moment when a good story mentally transports them somewhere else.

Audiobooks are not a new category within the service. Amazon Music Unlimited previously included access to the Audible catalogue in its subscription, allowing individual subscribers and primary users of family plans in selected markets to listen to one title per month. The new campaign therefore does not represent the first introduction of audiobooks to the app, but a current communication push that brings their role within the broader audio offering closer to audiences.

The way the films were created departs from the usual sequence in which work moves from writers to production and then to post-production. The studio used its own MakeMake Prototyping system, which immediately connected writers and strategists with design, direction, animation, editing, production, the VFX team and brand representatives. The studio’s founder Angus Wall believes that this approach removed blind handovers between departments and created more room to improve the idea throughout the entire process.

As a result, the films do not present the audiobook catalogue by listing titles, genres or the technical benefits of the subscription. Instead, they sell a few minutes in which the laundromat, kitchen or bus stop being places where people simply wait for a task to end.
