Haaland, Nike and Sports Direct: What If We Chose Gifts Based on Potential?

Agency Chaos x Magic has brought together Erling Haaland, Dina Asher-Smith, Leah Williamson, Henry Pollock and Aitch for the “Unwrap Potential” campaign, which turns Christmas shopping into a search for talents and interests that the right gift could help develop.

What do you give someone who doesn’t yet know what they might be good at? That is the question at the heart of this year’s Christmas campaign from Sports Direct and Nike, Unwrap Potential, in which sports stars take on the role of shopping advisers. Leading the team is Erling Haaland, and their task is to help shoppers recognise the potential of their loved ones and find a gift that could encourage them to develop it.

The campaign was created by independent creative agency Chaos x Magic, based on the idea that a good gift does not necessarily have to reflect only what someone currently enjoys, but also what they might discover an interest in. This approach has been named Athlete Intelligence, and rather than offering conventional product recommendations, the campaign places athletes at the centre of the communication, using their experience to help shoppers choose gifts.

In the main commercial, an uncle visits Sports Direct looking for a Christmas present for his niece, unaware that a team of sports stars is helping him make the right choice. After recognising her football potential, they recommend a pair of Nike Phantom 6 Low football boots associated with Haaland. The commercial was directed by Tyrus Hill through Park Pictures UK, with the athletes’ expertise and the seriousness with which they approach gift selection becoming a source of humour.

Alongside Haaland, the campaign features Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, England women’s football captain Leah Williamson, rugby player Henry Pollock and rapper Aitch. Each brings their own perspective, from running and football to trainers and streetwear. Aitch also finds himself in the role of a shopper seeking help with choosing presents for his sisters.

Their involvement extends beyond the commercial through dedicated gift guides, in which they recommend presents based on sporting interests and personal style. The campaign is also supported by five additional 10-second commercials exploring different gift-shopping scenarios.

Unwrap Potential launched today, 3 November, and marks the first exclusive joint Christmas brand campaign from Sports Direct and Nike. The campaign spans television, digital channels, social media and out-of-home advertising, as well as more than 900 Sports Direct stores internationally.

In the UK, the campaign is further amplified through ELEVATE, the retail media network of Frasers Group, which connects digital screens in stores, connected television and out-of-home advertising. This brings the idea from the commercial directly into the shopping environment, where recommendations from sports stars become part of the Christmas gift-selection experience.
