From a Customized Order to Starbucks’ Summer Brand Platform

The new Pink Energy platform connected beverages, merchandise and content in a visual world shaped by the way customers have spent years building the popularity of one of the brand’s most recognizable products.

Pink Drink did not become one of Starbucks’ best-known products thanks to a conventional launch. It began as a customization ordered by customers themselves, spread across social media and joined the permanent menu in 2017. Almost ten years later, Starbucks is turning that story into the foundation of a broader summer platform.

The Pink Energy campaign, developed with the agency American Haiku, began appearing in late June. Instead of introducing another seasonal beverage, the brand built a shared framework around its recognizable pink color for products, merchandise, content and in-store activities.

The first part of the platform brought a merchandise collection, followed by the introduction of a themed cup and a new line of frozen beverages launched on July 14. Among them is a blended interpretation of the original combination of strawberry, açaí berries and coconut milk. The individual launches were thus given a visual and communication link that will continue throughout the summer.

The creative materials do not explain the ingredients or attempt to prove the product’s functional value. The camera follows fragments of socializing, moving through the city, relaxing by the pool and spontaneous moments that resemble a shared photo album or unedited content from a phone gallery.

The campaign was created by an international group of photographers and directors consisting of Hugh Mulhern, Christine Yuan, Eimear Lynch, Adam Powell, Morgan Maher and Reese Layton. Their work is connected by pink details, drawings and graphic interventions, but is not shaped as a single linear story. Each scene feels like part of an already existing world that the product has entered naturally.

This approach stems from the way Starbucks interprets the concept of energy. Instead of the usual messages about productivity, achievement and constant movement, Pink Energy connects energy with confidence, attitude, creativity and the feeling that a person determines the atmosphere of the space they occupy.

The platform intentionally leaves room for the audience to complete its meaning themselves. This follows the history of Pink Drink, whose identity was not shaped exclusively by product and marketing teams, but also by customers who customized it, photographed it and turned it into a recognizable part of online culture, particularly among younger women.

The campaign will continue throughout the summer across social media, digital channels and physical locations, with media support from the agency Spark. For Starbucks, the pink color is not merely a signal of a particular flavor this time. It connects different products and content into a seasonal identity that the audience began building long before the brand gave it a name.
