Five Steps to a Perfectly Poured Stella, According to the Rules of The Gentlemen

Theo James and David Beckham turn the beer-serving ritual into the dramaturgy of a campaign through which Netflix and AB InBev are activating their partnership across multiple markets simultaneously for the first time.

In the world of the series The Gentlemen, the way something is done often reveals who knows the rules and who is merely trying to give that impression. Building on that logic, Stella Artois and Netflix have created The Gentlemen’s Serve, a campaign that translates the five steps of properly serving beer into the language of a series about status, control and precisely calculated moves.

The leading roles went to Theo James, who returns as Eddie Horniman, and brand ambassador David Beckham. In the film The Auction, they meet at the auction table, where a glass of Stella becomes part of a contest between two men accustomed to controlling the situation.

Their casting serves two different functions. James maintains the connection to the plot and the series’ distinctive tone, while Beckham gives the campaign reach beyond The Gentlemen’s existing audience. Instead of placing a celebrity partner next to a television character without a clear reason, the creators organised their encounter around a behaviour that already belongs to the brand.

The film is accompanied by five shorter instalments titled The Clean-Up, The Sacrifice, The Angle, The Cut and The Judgement. Each title corresponds to one stage of the Stella Artois serving ritual, but the process is presented as a series of decisions that can shift the balance of power in the world of The Gentlemen.

It is precisely this detail that distinguishes the project from the usual pairing of a brand with a streaming title. The product has not been inserted into the series’ familiar aesthetic simply to benefit from some of its popularity. Its existing ritual becomes the dramaturgical structure of the content. The campaign simultaneously explains how to serve Stella properly and turns that process into behaviour that feels credible within Guy Ritchie’s world.

The Gentlemen’s Serve was developed by the creative agency GUT Amsterdam in collaboration with the Netflix Brand Creative Studio. It is the first brand partnership connected to the series The Gentlemen and the first activation by Netflix and AB InBev to run simultaneously across multiple markets. It covers the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea.

This is also the first more concrete indication of how the partnership, announced last year, will work in practice. For Netflix, it opens an additional way to commercially leverage its titles beyond standard advertising on the platform. In return, AB InBev gains access to different stories and fan communities, allowing it to connect individual brands from its portfolio with titles that correspond to their positioning.

This model is particularly suitable for expansion across multiple markets. The central film and familiar faces retain global recognition, while experiences, social content, promotions and products can be adapted to local circumstances. The partners therefore do not have to rebuild the entire idea for each market, but the activation still goes beyond distributing the same video.

In this case, the films are supported by content developed for both partners’ channels, market activations and a limited-edition series of Stella Artois chalices. London pub The Marlborough will be transformed according to the world of the series from 3 to 5 September. Visitors will be able to search for hidden messages, order a beer according to The Gentlemen’s Serve ritual and win a personalised engraved chalice. The agency JKR is responsible for the activation’s visual identity.

The limited-edition chalices are not merely accompanying promotional items. They bring the campaign into the setting in which the product is actually consumed and allow audiences to repeat the ritual presented in the films. In this way, the same element connects the content, the experience in the hospitality venue and a physical object that remains after the activation ends.

The new season of The Gentlemen arrives on Netflix on 3 September. It will then become clearer how effectively this type of collaboration can convert attention surrounding the premiere into interest in the brand. For now, the most important decision is already visible: Stella Artois did not enter the series with its chalice alone, but also with the rules governing how it is used.
