Disney+ and Hulu turned the old video store format into an advertisement for streaming

A temporary installation in Los Angeles took the Throwbacks campaign beyond the apps and gave archival content a new physical point of contact with audiences.

For several days, one corner of Los Angeles looked like a video store whose shelves, packaging and televisions had been enlarged several times over. With the Throwbacks Rewind Corner installation, Disney+ and Hulu brought nostalgia for VHS tapes and DVD releases out of streaming apps and into the city.

The activation was installed at the intersection of Melrose and La Jolla Avenues, where passers-by encountered oversized film and series cases, a retro television and elements designed to resemble former home entertainment stores. Visitors did not simply observe the set, but could also trigger selected scenes, explore the installation and create content for social media.

The physical part of the campaign ended on July 26, but it served as an extension of the broader Throwbacks platform, through which Disney is bringing content from the 1990s and 2000s back into the audience’s focus. Rather than keeping nostalgia at the level of a collection within the app, the campaign gave it a space where it could be photographed, shared and once again turned into a social event.

The concept relies on the recognisability of old formats, even though it simultaneously promotes the service that replaced them. The VHS case and DVD shelf are not presented here as products that should return, but as a visual language that immediately signals a particular period, way of watching and relationship with content.

Rewind Corner continued a series of summer activities that Disney+ and Hulu organised beyond the screen. A retro pop-up space had previously opened at the Westfield Century City shopping centre, while special collections, marathon programming and additional content connected to the company’s archive were created within the platforms.

This approach gives the older catalogue new promotional value. Titles that have already been available for years are presented once again as a seasonal event, while the familiar past is also used to attract attention to new releases and sequels.

The campaign shows how streaming platforms are trying to overcome the limitations of their own interfaces. Rather than competing for attention only through thumbnails within the app, Disney+ and Hulu created a physical point of contact that brought archival content back among people and turned the street into an extension of their catalogue.
