Dentsu Creative has appointed veteran ad leader John Mescall as its first global chief creative partner, a new position aimed at elevating creative standards across the network and shaping its worldwide creative direction. Beginning mid September, Mescall will be based in New York and collaborate closely with Global CCO Yasu Sasaki and other senior leaders to activate the agency’s creative vision across markets.
Mescall previously held a comparable global role at McCann, where he partnered with international brand leaders and guided creative and strategic teams worldwide. Dentsu Creative views his connector-style leadership as vital to aligning and scaling its creative vision as the network grows.
Although his new role resembles what he did at McCann, Mescall described the Dentsu opportunity as fundamentally different, noting that at McCann he was tasked with steering an established, mature organization and optimizing what was already in place while at Dentsu, globally, is almost brand new. Now Mescall feels the freedom to help shape it in any way they need to in order to make it work.
In his new role, he will focus on four priorities: driving creative excellence and craft, strengthening a global creative community, integrating AI and new technologies to improve workflows, and advancing talent development opportunities across the network.
“He knows how to translate big ideas across markets, unlocking the strongest creative thinking from each region. As a champion of evolution and transformation, not just in the work, but in how we work, John will play a pivotal role in driving creative alignment, elevating our craft and delivering work that’s both culturally resonant and strategically unified, as we continue to scale our creative impact”, stated Abbey Klaassen, global president of Dentsu Creative.
Mescall admitted that global creative leadership roles in agencies can sometimes feel symbolic or ceremonial, but emphasized that his mandate at Dentsu is far more hands-on. His philosophy is rooted in everyday behaviors and practices, stressing that his responsibility is to ensure such practices happen and make a difference.
