Gifts remain part of Amazon’s Christmas communication, but in this year’s campaign, they do not reach the people for whom they were originally intended. Instead of the usual presentation of products and shopping benefits, the Joy Delivered campaign uses gift-giving to tell a story about human kindness and the importance of returning to family during the holidays.
At the center of the commercial is Joy, played by New Zealand actress Kate Laidler. After her flight is canceled on Christmas Eve due to severe weather conditions, she decides to find another way home. Her journey takes her through a series of unexpected encounters and different modes of transportation, from a bus and trailer to a boat and taxi. She thanks each person who helps her with a gift from her bag, although all the presents were originally intended for her family members.
As she gets closer to home, the number of gifts decreases, and her final reunion with her mother brings the campaign’s message full circle: the value of the holidays is not determined by what we bring, but by the people we spend them with.
The creative approach marks a shift from last year’s Amazon holiday campaign, Every Thing for Every Holiday, which emphasized the breadth of the company’s offering. This time, products play a secondary role, while the communication relies on an emotional connection with the audience. An important part of shaping the atmosphere is the song Golden Slumbers by The Beatles, whose lyrics about finding a way home connect with the protagonist’s story. The music accompanies her journey through different landscapes and encounters with strangers, all the way to her final return to her family.
The campaign was developed by Amazon’s in-house creative team, Amazon XCM, while Mark Molloy directed the commercial through production company SMUGGLER. The spot was filmed in New Zealand, with Work Offline and post-production studio Alt.vfx also involved in its production. The media partner is Omnicom NYC, while Amazon’s internal team MODE was involved in social media.
The campaign will run on television, streaming platforms, digital channels, social media and in cinemas. Alongside the original two-and-a-half-minute version, shorter versions have been prepared for different media formats.
