“All marketers are liars”. It’s not an accident that the famous bestseller by Seth Godin was given that title. And they really are! I’ve been working in marketing since I graduated (and I will definitely continue working there until I abdicate) and I can testify to it, first-hand, through the prism of this book. If you haven’t already, read it – I give my warm recommendation! The difference between storytelling and storyliving is what is missing in many people’s formula for success (hence the recommendation to read the book).
Anyway, working for the leading media system in the region, and even earlier when I was “bleeding” on the karate mat for our country in the march towards the world throne, I realized that you can’t get to the top until you convince yourself of this “lie”! However, there’s a catch. “No one is stupid enough to believe in fairy tales.” Imagine a situation (with no intention of offending anyone) in which the Rudar football club from Tavnik, a very dear club from the native town of my ancestors, says: “Next year we will be the European champions!” Yeah, right!
So this, let’s call it a lie, is not enough! But it is necessary, we will agree, to at least hope for miracles! So what else is needed then?
It’s necessary to believe in “lies”! And even more, it’s necessary to live the “lies”! To do everything to make them true! You need to plant a winning mentality deep in your DNA, and with a series of small and large victories, through a life of believing, and the celebration of success, you need to reach your “lie” – or, should I say, your truth.
We at Direct Media realized that we were living our “lie” when others wanted to join our winning team. It is our partners who have confirmed that we are on the right track, and they continue to confirm this. The market doesn’t lie. Like a litmus test, it’s there to warn you if you are on the wrong path, and to give you a clear sign when you actually put things where they belong. However, we are aware that this is a never-ending process, and that with every day we have a greater and greater responsibility to tear down the “truths” of the market and the industry, and set new “lies” that will serve as a new benchmark for all of us.
Adapting business processes, selecting the right people, the right means of communication, constantly improving ourselves and our colleagues, getting the maximum out of everyone, orientating ourselves towards results – all that was necessary in order for us to get to the point where we are now, and even more, to get to where we want to be.
You are what you carry within you, and the market is just an indicator. Believe in yourself (because no one else will), but even more, work on yourself (because again – no one else will), give your best to earn this lofty goal. Because if you don’t earn it, then you’re just a LIAR.
