Advertising often uses shock value to provoke public attention, which was probably the idea behind the latest campaign by Yves Saint Laurent.
However, their ads caused outrage on social networks, showing a woman in compromising postures, with fishnet stockings and legs spread wide. The inevitable question over the look of the models and their skinny bodies was also raised.
Women around the world felt insulted and humiliated, so a hashtag #YSLRetireTaPubDegradante (YSL, remove degrading ads) started making rounds on Twitter.
One of the most condemning comments on the campaign was certainly the one that said ads look like they don’t show a woman, but a victim of sexual abuse.
Coincidentally or not, the campaign was launched just in time for International Women’s Day, which only caused additional negative comments on social networks.
