The One Club and Art Directors Club have come together to form a global organization called The One Club for Creativity, pending approval by the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
José Mollá, chairman of The One Club Board and founder and chief creative officer of The Community, will continue in his role as chairman of the new entity. Philippe Meunier, president of ADC and creative chief and co-founder of Sid Lee, will become part of the new board.
The One Show, ADC Annual Awards, Young Guns and their Halls of Fame, as well as education and diversity program, will all operate under The One Club for Creativity.
“It’s the right timing in terms of where we want to take The One Club because the mission of The One Club is way bigger than The One Show and all the initiatives that we are doing are much bigger than that,” said Mr. Mollá.
He added that the awards, “if we do it right, could complement each other” because they could expand into other categories, become more international and focus more on progressive design. The One Club’s international board of directors has members from 10 countries, and Mr. Molla said the new combined organization has “a great opportunity to become stronger on the global stage.”
Mr. Molla said the merged group is “not a direct consequence” of awards fatigue. “I think the opportunity with ADC is to stand for something more than just a niche awards and making it really international, but I think the challenge all the awards have is to stay relevant and reinvent themselves — and I think The One Show has done a great job at that,” he said.
The ADC and The One Show awards will both continue running because they have “two different focuses,” with the ADC being more about design and innovation and The One Club looking at advertising, said Mr. Meunier. He added that the ADC, which did not have its festival this year that it held for the three years prior, will look at doing some type of “gathering” again in the future. The festival was not held this year because he said ADC realized it was not big enough and it should spend more time focusing on the future of the organization.
Members will see major benefits from the two groups merging, added Mr. Meunier. “We’re all going to share our programming and our legacy and all of our activities, so now if you’re a member of The One Club or ADC, you get way more for your membership and more access to the industry and more programming and education,” he said.
In the 1970s, a group of ADC members decided to form The Copy Club around copywriting, which later became The One Club. “The beauty of it is the legacy,” said Mr. Meunier, especially since ADC is “approaching 100 years old soon and we’re back to the roots of the two clubs together.”
