Last year’s most anticipated movie, Star Wars – The Force Awakens, continues to record excellent financial results, proving to be the greatest money factory in the film industry.
Only from sale of Star Wars toys in the US, Disney in 2015 raked in more than $700 million, and in Canada about $100 million. Star Wars toys thus became the hottest item in the US last year. For example, one of the most wanted Christmas gifts was BB8, a mini-droid toy which you operate with a smartphone or a tablet.
New models of toys will soon hit the market, and estimates say that by the end of this year Disney will make a whopping five billion dollars from books, toys, clothes and action figures alone
According to the US research firm NPD Group, the total earnings from sales of toys in the United States in 2015 amounted to $19.4bil, up 6.7 percent compared to a year earlier, and in 2016 even better results are expected.
The film Star Wars – The Force Awakens became the first movie ever to reach the figure of one billion dollars from global sale of tickets in only 12 days. It thus broke the record previously held by Jurassic World, which took 13 days for the same feat. As for the total earnings in the world, James Cameron’s Avatar from 2009 brought profits of nearly $2.8bil, but it’s expected that Star Wars will exceed this figure as well.
Disney bought the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh movie of the franchise.
