A Slovenian-Croatian video project developed with the help of artificial intelligence, created by the creative studio Digital Da Vincis for the PEEK&POKE computer museum in Rijeka, has officially been nominated for the 29th Webby Awards – also known as the “Internet Oscars,” which have been honoring the best digital projects in the world since 1997.
The nominated project, titled Alternate Re[AI]lity, is competing in the AI, Immersive & Games categories under Best in Arts, Culture & Events. This is the first Webby nomination for a project from Slovenia, and it also highlights the creative potential of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region through collaboration with Croatia.
Competitors include giants like Google, the Salvador Dalí Museum, the Rijksmuseum from Amsterdam, and the Dutch agency Norday.
This year, the Webby Awards received nearly 13,000 submissions from over 70 countries, with only 12% making it to the final round. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 22, and the awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Ilana Glazer, will take place on Monday, May 12 in New York.
Alternate Re[AI]lity
“Alternate Re[AI]lity: Computer History Around 1890” is a social media video series imagining what the world of technology might have looked like in the late 19th century – if computers and video games had existed back then. The format mimics archival silent films, creating fictional documentaries about innovations from that era.
The project uses real exhibits from the PEEK&POKE museum – from old computers, consoles, and telephones to space tech – processed with AI tools such as Midjourney, Runway, Pika, Luma, and the music generator Udio.
The campaign has already won a Silver at the Epica Awards and Bronze at The Anthem Awards, confirming its creative value on the international stage.
PEEK&POKE Museum
Founded in 2007 in Rijeka, PEEK&POKE is one of the most unique technical museums in the region. Entirely volunteer-run, it offers visitors an interactive journey through the history of computing – where you can watch, touch, and play with hundreds of retro devices, including early Macintosh computers and arcade classics.
Webby Awards
Known as “the internet’s highest honor” according to The New York Times, the Webby Awards celebrate excellence in digital creation – from websites and video content to AI, podcasts, social media, and immersive experiences.
They are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS).
Here’s what the project creators had to say:
Kirill Karnovich-Valua, Creative Director, Digital Da Vincis:
“To be nominated for an award known as the ‘Internet Oscar’ is the ultimate recognition for any digital creator. But what makes this nomination truly special is the story behind it – it’s a pro bono project for a small, yet exceptional, computer museum in Rijeka run entirely by volunteers.
And now we’re side by side with global giants like Apple, Netflix, Nike, Google, the Dalí Museum, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga.
This nomination proves that you don’t need a big budget to make a big impact – all it takes is an idea, creativity, and a bit of courage.”
Davor Pasarić, Creative Director, PEEK&POKE:
“With this project, we wanted to explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence – not just as a technology, but as a medium for storytelling.
Our goal was to create interesting, fun, and engaging content for social media that also holds cultural value.
We also wanted to showcase the unique character of our museum, where nostalgia meets curiosity.
We are a small team – and that’s why this kind of recognition truly means a lot to us.”
