An unusual advertising campaign popped up on the streets of Zagreb. The American Institute, an association for the promotion of English language and American culture, opted for a provocative solution that calls on citizens to “just imagine how far you can get – with a little English.”
Using the illustration of one of the most famous emigrants from this area, Melania Trump, the message unambiguously refers to a person who, with little knowledge of a foreign language, came to the position of one of the most powerful people on the planet.
“Most foreign language schools speak the same language, which is irony in communication,” says Brett Campbell, founder of the American Institute and originally Bostonian. “We wanted a campaign that reminded people of the importance of knowing the languages of the world and how important this knowledge is for international success. We are witnessing the great wave of emigration of Croatians who are looking for their fortune in Anglo-Saxon countries, such as Ireland, Canada, Australia etc. If you speak English well, you can reach very far in these markets. And we can help you,” said Campbell.
