Ecology and topics in the field of environmental protection are not the first choice of media in the selection of daily content. To be quite honest, they’re not even among the top five. Politics, crime, showbiz… media are not only keeping us in the “constant loop of bad reality”, but they also leave very little space for topics that we really need to talk about, otherwise we are facing a truly bleak future. Thus, the latest significant date in this area that calls us to “environmental vigilance”, the World Wetlands Day, needed to find its way to media attention.
McCann Sarajevo succeeded in sparking the attention of BH public for this environmental topic with the organization of an interesting multimedia event. A press conference, an educational children’s corner, panel discussions, exhibition, film, quiz … Learning in an interactive and entertaining way about the importance of wetlands. Participants also had the chance to hear about the main threats to three internationally protected wetlands in Bosnia and Herzegovina, protected under the Ramsar Convention: Livanjsko Polje, Hutovo Blato and Bardača.
Many citizens of Sarajevo on that day had the opportunity to visit a thematically created educational – exhibition pavilion, erected in front of the SCC, which included a display of flora and fauna of wetlands, and the youngest visitors, pupils of Vladisav Skarić primary school, presented their impressions of what they learned. “Nature conservation is the most important thing we need, because if there is no nature there is no life,” said Hamza Hadžić, while Farah Zukić added: “If we destroy nature, we destroy the homes of some animals.”
The interest was also shown by a number of journalists so a number of media conveyed the main message of the press conference, that our wetlands are being destroyed due to the negligence of the relevant institutions and failure to comply with domestic law, but also international conventions. Speaking at the press conference were representatives of NGOs: WWF Adria, Euronatura, Orintološko društvo Naše ptice, Centar mladih Livno, Dinarica and Centar za životnu sredinu.
