It took more than a century, but Johnnie Walker has finally put a woman on the face of its bottles. In honor of Women’s History Month, the Diageo brand has introduced Jane Walker, a female version of its iconic “Striding Man” logo.
Jane will appear on a limited run of special bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label called “The Jane Walker Edition.” They’ll go on sale in March all around the U.S, and $1 from each sold will go to organizations helping to further women’s causes, up to $250,000 in total.
The effort is part of what the brand has dubbed the “#WalkWithJane” program and will benefit nonprofits like Monumental Women, which seeks to add more monuments to female icons to our country’s landscape and She Should Run, which supports women running for public office.
Johnnie Walker introduced its original “Striding Man” logo in 1908 after a competition held by company founder John Walker’s son Alexander. Cartoonist Tom Browne came up with the winnng image after sketching it on the back of a menu during a business lunch. Over the years, the Striding Man has evolved, even at the hands of female creatives like Doris Zinkeisen, who worked on Striding Man campaigns in the 1920s. But it’s not until 2018 that a woman has become a part of the logo itself. Johnnie Walker’s ad agency Anomaly New York designed the Jane Walker icon.
