Have you ever considered that brands are not just around us – but that we are actually all brands? That every day we “sell” ourselves to different groups of people, and that we build our own personal image that is becoming more and more important, above all through social media?
Branding expert David Brier, who is coming to this year’s SEMPL conference as a speaker, says that what we are will increasingly mean more than what we do. The public image of a person is important in some of the major steps in life. This can be acceptance into certain educational institutions, and even more important in job search. Be assured that your potential employers will check your social media profiles, even though it seems to you that it is something personal.
Social media portray our public image
So it’s good that you take some time and review your public profiles. Delete posts or photos that you believe are inappropriate for the public. First of all, if you are in the process of looking for a new job, it is worth dedicating time to “clean up” your social network profiles.
Before you write a job application, take some time and think about who you are. How would you describe yourself in just three words? What are your qualities, what do you aspire to? We often know ourselves so that we don’t even notice our true virtues, so it is important to distinguish what makes you stand out and why you are different from others. What makes you the “Coca-Cola” on the market of all other refreshing drinks.
Tell your own story
David Brier also points out that if you don’t build your own story, others will build it for you. So don’t let your story be told by others. A personal brand is not something that can arise overnight. This is a process that requires dedication. A personal brand is also not something we create today and never deal with it again. It develops with us, it changes with the essential milestones in our lives.
It may seem that this is not for you, but believe it is very important. The labor market is saturated as shelves in stores. If you want to stand out and take the place you want, think of yourself as a brand. Why would you take “yourself off the shelf”? Invest in yourself and build your own personal brand.
You might even begin doing so by coming to listen to one of the greatest branding professionals, David Brier, at the SEMPL conference, to be held on 29 and 30 November 2018 in the Grand Hotel Bernardin in Portorož, Slovenia.
