AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT are quickly replacing traditional search engines as many users’ go-to tool for browsing the web. Tapping into this shift, Mozilla is aiming to reintroduce its Firefox browser to Gen Z audiences through creator-led content, and is strengthening that strategy by appointing its first dedicated creator agency.
Firefox announced that it has named Whalar, the creator marketing division of Whalar Group, as its global creator partner. Although the two have previously collaborated on individual creator campaigns, this new partnership marks a deeper investment in creator marketing as Firefox works to build stronger connections with Gen Z consumers across the U.S. and Europe. Last October, Firefox and Whalar launched “Frank Conversations,” a three-episode interview series hosted by actor and podcaster Owen Thiele. Each episode involved Thiele speaking with Gen Z Chicago residents about their online privacy and data security concerns.
“With the introduction of these AI browsers, it means that browsers are back in the conversation,” Christina Lang, Mozilla’s VP of global marketing, told Ad Age, “and I think that there’s a really interesting opportunity for Firefox to kind of stand out as the browser that really allows you to have choice in how you protect yourself [and] what data you share. A lot of people, especially younger people, don’t realize that your browser choice is one of the most important choices that you can make as far as what you decide to share about yourself online.”
That spirit of “daily defiance” is at the heart of Firefox’s first global creator-led campaign, “Open What You Want.”
Developed in collaboration with Whalar, the campaign brings Firefox into local communities through a series of daytime dance events dubbed “House Blends.” Hosted at neighborhood cafés across the U.S. and Europe, these “coffee raves” feature appearances by creator partners who interact with attendees, introduce them to Firefox, and highlight the freedom and autonomy that come with choosing an independent browser.
Creators also extend the reach of these events by sharing content from the gatherings in real time and afterward on their social channels. The first two House Blends events were held on Oct. 4 in Chicago and Berlin, with Chicago participants including entrepreneur and micro-influencer Anuja Bagri, local experiences creator Daniel Romero, and lifestyle creator Megan Schibelka.
