Designers, students, and industry professionals gathered in Ljubljana to celebrate this year’s festival theme: ‘Eccentricity in Focus’. The festival program included lectures, exhibitions, and workshops across the city. The central exhibition, ‘Eccentricity – Design Beyond the Center,’ held at Ljubljana’s City Hall, showcased over 50 renowned designers from six former Yugoslav republics. Cukrarna hosted the iconic TRIO design exhibition ‘Greetings from Sarajevo’, while students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Design, and Xiamen University’s Institute of Creative Arts exhibited their works throughout the city, offering a glimpse into the future of design.
Workshops like Typo Walk and Design Walk brought creative energy into public spaces, inviting visitors to experience Ljubljana through typography and visual storytelling.
Demetrios Fakinos, Executive Director of the European Design Awards, noted this was the 19th edition of the festival and awards.
‘I’m proud that over the years we’ve built a community of design professionals and enthusiasts who follow the festival across Europe. Congratulations to all the EDA winners – once again, we’ve seen proof that European design is in good hands’, said Fakinos.
At the ceremony celebrating excellence in nine categories, this year’s European Design Awards recognized the most innovative work in branding, packaging, promotion, publications, typography, illustration, digital applications, in-house productions, and various special categories. In total, the EDA jury awarded 29 gold, 35 silver, and 47 bronze awards, alongside five special honors. Winners received their awards from international delegates.
Radovan Arnold, President of the Brumen Foundation and organizer of this year’s EDF, emphasized that their aim was to create more than just a moment.
‘We envisioned a platform for regional and European exchange. Ljubljana now stands shoulder to shoulder with European cultural capitals, and this moment will echo far beyond the festival itself,’ Arnold said.
Prominent Slovenian figures enriched the EDF discussion: Dr. Petra Černe Oven and Nejc Prah spoke at the main conference, Dr. Anja Stefan led a workshop on strategic management, and Silvija Gregorčič and Valentin Grudnik from Better took part on the business stage.
The program also featured talks by European design experts including Augustinas Paukštė, Agyei Archer, Dorotea Škrabo, Andrej & Andrej, Anna-Mari Tenhunen, Valerio Monopoli, Lemke Meijer, and Aurelija Mockevičiūtė. A regional meeting of the International Council of Design added a broader international dimension, with speakers such as Melike Taşcıoğlu Vaughan, Lawrence Zeegen, Iva Babaja, Anssi Kähärä, Johnathon Strebly, Kyle Rath, Jonas Liugaila, and Qin Du.
