Citizens of all age groups participated in the diverse program, mostly staying in the Old Military Hospital and in the unconventionally designed DDZ Market in Ratkaj’s passage, which hosted high-quality and carefully selected local projects. Visitors of Design District Zagreb enjoyed the transformation of the otherwise busy street into a green and optimistic place tailored to the needs of citizens, and the impressive floral installation Baustella, which didn’t fail to impress.
As its more lasting contribution to the neighborhood, the festival installed a temporary installation Space Invader at the corner of Vojnovica and Martića street, which will stay there for 90 days, reviving the neglected corner and giving it a platform for meetings, rest and play.
The permanent contribution to the neighborhood is certainly the newly created mural “Collage on the Wall” created on the facade of the Primary School Matka Laginje, which was painted during the festival by Damir Sobota as part of the European project CreArt, whose Croatian partner is Croatian Society of Fine Artists (HDLU).
“We are delighted that once again we have demonstrated the power of design as a cohesive tool, a kind of invisible glue that can easily hold together spatial experiments, civic initiatives and creative entrepreneurial projects. We are proud of the inclusiveness of the project, where every good initiative can find its meaningful place. This festival could be described as a ‘justified optimism’ – once again we have demonstrated the power of good ideas, critical thinking and contagious enthusiasm that is all around us, and as such (creative, well thought out and authentic) it is interesting to both citizens and tourists. The Zagreb Tourist Board recognized this as the value of the project and they have been a great support for us since the very beginning,” said Ira Payer, the creative director of the festival.
The Design District Zagreb has also transformed the premises of the Old Military Hospital in the Vlaška 87 street, with the Local Roads Program, exhibiting twenty projects from the fields of design, architecture, urbanism, graphics, comics, photography and video.
Design District Zagreb 2018 was organized by Superstudio and Design Center Zagreb, with the support of the Zagreb Tourist Board, the Zagreb Culture Office and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
