From 10 to 12 June, in the space of Jedinstvo plant and the club Močvara on the Sava embankment in Zagreb, the 7th edition of the International Festival D Day will be held, for which the organizers – Croatian Designers Association (HDD) – prepared three exhibitions, a rich schedule of workshops and lectures, many international guests and interesting music program.
This year’s D Day sets open design as a starting point for a discourse on the concept of open design in the narrow context of the design profession, and within the broader social context and the process of ‘opening’ of design. In a narrow sense, through lectures, panels and workshops, participants will analyze the legal, theoretical and practical framework of the concept of open design and its relationship with the market environment. In a broader sense, they will explore the open design as a process of user involvement in design practices, which pushes the boundaries of technology and tools that are used, with a range of implications that this entails.
At the same time, organizers are interested in typical collaborative processes and methodologies that arise in the design of open access and means in which they contribute to the ‘opening’ of design, and its wider and more intensive use in other areas. On the examples of various art, engineering and design works, a series of questions will open and discussion will be provoked from different standpoints and approaches to the topic.
The thematic curated exhibition will show works of different scope and ambition that use the principles of open design; Exhibition of young artists will show a selection of the best entries on free topic; and a special part of the program is Exhibition of Illustrators Powered by Iskon, which will present Gerg Kovács – artist and illustrator from Budapest.
The discursive program will encourage dialogue between design and other disciplines, while workshops will introduce local artists to practices with which they would otherwise meet only in some places and rarely.
