The wine label design for Piquentum, created by Studio Sonda, has been recognized on the website of RGD (The Association of Registered Graphic Designers), Canada’s leading professional body for graphic design, as one of the five most innovative wine label designs. The featured projects “bring innovative design approaches” and elevate design to a new level. In the case of Piquentum, the standout qualities are the striking minimalistic design with a contemporary aesthetic, the label’s educational potential, and the synergy of science and branding.
In collaboration with the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service, Studio Sonda collected weather data from the vineyard over a period of years to use as the foundation for designing the wine labels. Since each vintage differs due to changing weather conditions, so does each label. Through a series of circular graphics representing monthly precipitation (from one harvest to the next), the behavior of nature is literally translated onto the label. In this way, nature itself becomes part of the art direction, and the label becomes a visual record of the year and a unique trace of nature’s behavior.

Thanks to this idea, Piquentum has broken into new markets and made its way into some of the world’s most prominent restaurants. Studio Sonda, in turn, has received numerous awards and accolades, including the second-ever Cannes Lion in Croatian history in the Industry Craft category at the world’s largest creativity competition. The project has also received honorary recognition and awards from the Croatian Designers Association for packaging design. Designaustria honored it with a Joseph Binder Award in the packaging design category, and additional accolades include Eurobest 2017, Red Dot 2017, the Grand Prix at Days of Communication, the ADC Golden Cube – the top award in the packaging category – as well as gold and silver at the London International Awards. The project Piquentum – Art Directed by Nature was also awarded as the best project of Balcannes 2019. The recognition from RGD affirms the international relevance of the project, and by being listed among the five most innovative wine labels, both Piquentum and Studio Sonda have once again proven that local stories can resonate globally and that sustainable, thoughtful solutions can reach even the most discerning professional circles and consumers worldwide.
