More than 1.6 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing—a number that could nearly double by 2030, according to the United Nations. One of the main reasons for this crisis is the shortage of construction workers. By 2028, an additional 250,000 construction workers will be needed to meet demand, and nearly a third of construction companies cite finding skilled labor as a “key challenge.”
New startup companies, such as Amsterdam-based Monumental, could help bridge this gap. Their AI-powered robots specialize in bricklaying and have the potential to reduce the demand for labor, says founder and CEO Salar al Khafaji to MT/Sprout: “Our robots can work alongside the existing workforce and are capable of operating in any weather conditions, delivering very consistent results.”
“The global construction robotics market is expected to grow by 17.5% annually until 2030. These AI-powered assistants are being developed worldwide—from robots painting and installing floor tiles in Singapore to roof installers in the U.S. Another Dutch startup, ROPAX, has even built an entire house. Perhaps by next year, a robot might build your home too,” says Melvin Captein.
