Google’s business “in the cloud” won the first major client, marking an important victory over the market leader in this segment, the Amazon. According to the US media, Apple has moved part of its iCloud services to the Google Cloud. This does not mean that Apple has completely turned its back on the Amazon, and along with their own data centers, they also use Microsoft’s cloud services.
This is the second important client for Google given that last month the music streaming service Spotify announced that they would move majority of their services from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Google’s platform. AWS is the market leader in this segment, thanks to a contract with the US Department of Defense, while in second place is Microsoft Azure. In relation to these two competitors, Google is far behind. In fact, a recent survey by RightScale, a provider of management services in the cloud, shows that only six percent of respondents use Google’s cloud infrastructure, versus 17 percent for Microsoft and 57 percent for Amazon. According to estimates of bank Morgan Stanley, Apple alone will pay a billion dollars this to AWS for the use of this platform, which is a tenth of the company’s revenue.
However, Google has apparently decided to strongly enter the competition, and proof of this is the appointment of the experienced Diane Greene as head of Google Cloud. Participants in the market told Financial Times that with the arrival of Greene this company became much more aggressive in negotiations with potential buyers.
