A total of 48 works competed in the Contest for Design of Visual Identity, organized by the Apoksiomena Museum. The jury of the competition composed of Damir Bralić (Chairman) and members Ingrid Stanković, Idis Turato, Mauro Ferlin and Maroje Mrduljaš, reviewed the submitted works and selected the best.
The first prize in the gross amount of 40,000 HRK (ca. €5000) was given to work by Luka Predragović, titled “U četiri oka” (tete-a-tete).
Explanation of the jury
Among a series of proposals that use the motif of sculpture or a part of it, the winning proposal stands out by its clarity, precision and completeness. Graphically abstracted eye sockets enlivened by blue colour “complement” the sculpture with the one thing that is physically missing.
Anatomical elements of the sculpture thus become the holder of the visual identity and logically create the necessary symbolic and utilitarian potential. In accordance with the idea of a “museum with a single artefact”, this solution personifies and identifies the museum with its exhibit. Newly created eyes, quite appropriately, become a kind of an interface of the museum / sculpture with visitors and the world.
Other parts of the body also successfully conquer their utilitarian functionality through pictograms used in spatial signalling, with the possibility of expanding their signifying role.
The design decision to focus on a detail suits the exhibiting principle of gradual discovery of the full sculpture, as well as its fragmented state during the discovery. Reduced graphic expression has a desirable potential of expansion and diversification with application in a variety of media and labelling of the souvenir stock.
