Adidas has continued to highlight waste plastic in the oceans, this time recycling plastic pollutants to produce the third strip for Spanish football team and Champions League winners Real Madrid.
The hot pink coral kit was unveiled at Hunters Point, New York. The gear will be mass produced from Parley Ocean Plastic with the launch attended by Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.
The brand said the unique colour of the kit will represent the various shades of coral in the ocean, a call to action to protect the unique ecosystems before they all die off worldwide from pollution and plastics.
Large brands and especially clothing manufacturers like Adidas are regularly highlighted as a major source of ocean pollution. Now, it has taken sustainability on-board and in 2017, it sold more than one million pairs of trainers made from ocean plastic. These moves help develop more sustainable production methods, especially on the back of Greenpeace stats that an estimated 12.7m tonnes of plastic are dumped in the oceans each year.
At the event, Adidas held a panel discussion and held workshops on how the public can reduce its plastic waste.
The new kit will first be worn Wednesday, at Real Madrid – AS Roma match.
