What if a label was not something added at the end of the production process, but rather its most authentic trace? It was precisely this question that gave rise to the Piquentum Brut Nature project by Studio Sonda, which has recently been awarded Gold at the European Design Awards in the Wine Packaging category.
For this sparkling wine, the label is not the result of graphic treatment or material selection. It was created from the sediment that naturally remains after the wine production process. Instead of ending up as a by-product, it became part of the packaging and a physical proof of the way the wine was produced.
This approach stems directly from the philosophy of the Piquentum brand. For the secondary fermentation process, no industrial sugars or artificial yeasts are used, but rather those obtained from grape must sourced from the winery’s own organic vineyards. The label therefore does not interpret the production process – it literally emerges from it.
Its transformation continues even after the bottle reaches consumers. Natural processes leave traces on the surface, developing noble mould and other changes that make each bottle unique. All of this takes place in accordance with European regulations governing packaging and product labelling.
The limited series of 700 bottles was distributed exclusively through restaurants, where sommeliers play an important role in conveying the story behind the wine and the concept that supports it. Market interest proved to be greater than expected – production for 2026 and 2027 has already sold out, while the restaurant network continues to expand into markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
This latest European recognition is only a continuation of a successful year for the project. During NY Creative Week, it won an ADC Gold Cube at the ADC Awards and a Merit Award at The One Show, both organised by The One Club for Creativity. In the regional context, it was also recognised at Dani komunikacija, where it won four Gold awards across the BalCannes and IdejaX competitions.
For Studio Sonda, this marks its seventh award from the European Design Awards, an international recognition presented by European design media with the support of the International Council of Design. The winners are selected by a jury composed of design critics and journalists from fifteen specialist publications, while this year’s ceremony took place on 13 June in Sofia.
In the case of Piquentum Brut Nature, the label was not conceived as a finishing detail, but as part of a broader concept that follows the philosophy of wine production from beginning to end.
