The main guests of the 33rd Business Café in Zagreb were Kata Barišić, owner of the webshop PokloniMe, Mirjana Vučetić, director of the factory for the production of pumps Hamowa-Hydro, which operates more than 25 years, Monika Sledz, director of sales for the Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences, and the surprise guest, Viktorija Knežević, for 10 years the owner of the largest law firm in Dubrovnik.
Kata Barišić, with the help of her sister and brother, successfully manages the webshop PokloniMe which among other things offers experiential and personalized gifts. Her entrepreneurial path was preceded by the experience of working in a corporation. Like many of her colleagues in the time of crisis of 2008, former boss escorted her from the workplace with a message that ‘situation is not rosy in our company’. Kata is now happy and says: “Five years later, I believe that going into entrepreneurship was the best decision of my life – I do what I want, with who I want, when I want. New beginnings are usually tied with painful endings.” She recommended the book Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks and advised: “Do what you would do if you weren’t being paid, the thing which makes you lose sleep, and the universe will open to let you pass.”
For online shopping in Croatia she says it’s only in its infancy, but her idea is to make PokloniMe be top of the mind to the customer who thinks of gifts. To every visitor of Business Café she gave a voucher of 100 HRK, and one visitor was lucky to receive arrangements ‘become a pilot for a day’ and ‘become a shepherd for a day’. For Business Café she says it’s the “best coffee in town”, adding that as a regular guest at these gatherings she has met a dozen business partners.
Monika Sledz presented the group Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences, which now has 35 hotels, and 60 years ago they started with one: “The beginnings are slow, but if you have a big heart and are ready to work, you have the key ingredients for success.” In Croatia this company has 5000 beds, and future plans include further expansion of offer because, she says, the international reputation of Croatia is excellent.
Motto of Falkensteiner Hotels & Residences group is “welcome home”, and her own motto is “be happy and enjoy life”. She invited all the guests from the audience to approach her in the informal part of the event and present their ideas, because she supports the work of small businesses and believes that they can jointly change the world.
The third guest was Mirjana Vučetić from Karlovac, who has spent 15 years as part of the factory for the production of pumps Hamowa-Hydro. Her father-in-law started the company in the 90’s, and Mirjana gradually progressed in the business to the position of director. For her father-in-law she said he was her mentor, and that he taught her that in business every entrepreneur has to ‘risk it’. For her, entrepreneurship is a process of seeking solutions. “My job is the challenge of finding people for the team, progress, the process of movement and the creation of new values, and work for my country.”
Surprise guest was Viktorija Knežević, who leads the Business Café in Dubrovnik as well as the largest law firm. She talked about the most common misconceptions about the law. Family businesses have the biggest deficit of legal services, and the attitude ‘we don’t need a contract, we’re friends’ was pointed out as one of the most common mistakes.
