Naomi Parker Fraley was one of the women who got jobs in military industry during WWII. Her photograph, on the front pages of all major newspapers with heading “workwear doesn’t make Naomi Parker less attractive” inspired J. Howard Miller to design one the most famous American posters “Rosie the Riveter”. The woman wearing a red bandana and showing the strength of her biceps became a touchstone of female power of the time.

Naomi Parker Fraley died a week ago, at 96 in Washington. Her name is obscure, but we can still see her on that cult poster “Rosie the Riveter” or “We Can Do It”. She inspired J. Howard Miller, an artist from Pittsburgh to create the poster. The woman wearing a red polka dot bandana and showing the strength of her biceps became a touchstone of female power of the time.
