SLOVENIAN PUBLIC BROADCASTER BANS ADS FOR CHOCOLATES, CANDY AND OTHER SWEETS
In order to counteract the negative impact of TV advertising regarding obesity among children and youth, Slovenian public television has adopted strict rules in accordance with which they will ban commercial advertising of chocolate, candy and other fattening sweets, but also other unhealthy foods, in time slots when this population is in front of TV screens.
The study, which in a one-year period covered and analyzed the content of programs of all television stations, showed that in Slovenia 96 percent of advertisements for food products are related to food whose commercial advertising to children and adolescents should be banned according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
Whopping 77% of such advertising relates to products with a high content of sugar and other substances that affect the weight gain, which is why they are not recommended for children, regardless of their potential nutritional value.
Director of RTV Slovenia Marko Filli signed an order according to which advertisements of manufacturers of chocolate, candy, various desserts, biscuits, sweet rolls and so-called energy drinks will be purged from the program, for the health benefit of young population.
