Initiative Stop Funding Hate has achieved a major victory as 190 countries approved the final text of a new international agreement – the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration
Stop Funding Hate launched a campaign in August 2016, seeking to make hate unprofitable, and promote the idea of ‘ethical advertising’ by persuading companies to pull advertising from newspapers that incite hatred against minority groups.
Part of their activities was also advocating and proposing ways that UN member states could tackle xenophobia, and the organization put forward the idea that: “if we want to tackle xenophobia effectively then we have to talk to advertisers and encourage them to switch their advertising away from publications that demonise migrants… UN Member States can lead by example by publicly committing to the principle of ethical advertising – and ensuring that any government advertising campaigns are not channelled through media that have a track record of inciting hatred.”
The new international agreement, UN Global Compact for Migration, references advertising specifically, and will now become part of – the international framework of global agreements and treaties which follow from the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
