For years, the industry has debated whether creativity and effectiveness should be measured separately. Today, as brands face increasing pressure to justify every investment, that question has become more relevant than ever. The challenge is no longer proving that creativity works, but understanding what kind of creativity creates lasting business value.

Few creative leaders have explored that balance more consistently than David Guerrero. As Creative Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of BBDO Guerrero, member of the BBDO Worldwide Creative Council and President of the Omni-Channel Drum Jury and one of the speakers at Golden Drum 2026, he has spent decades creating ideas that deliver both creative recognition and commercial success. In this exclusive interview, Guerrero reflects on why the strongest ideas are often the smartest business investments, what holds the industry back from bolder work, and how agencies and clients can build partnerships that drive lasting growth.

You’ve created globally awarded and culturally viral work over decades. How do you personally define the point where a bold creative idea also becomes a strong business investment?

A great idea will always start as something that somebody loves and passionately believes in. Later on, someone will come along and call it an investment. And if they protect the idea, they will reap the rewards.

Many brands today are focused on short-term performance marketing. What role do you think long-form, idea-led creativity plays in building sustainable business growth?

Idea-led creativity builds valuable brand assets that yield dividends over time. After a while these assets become so powerful that they can activate effective campaigns with minimal investment. Alternatively while short-term activations have short-term rewards, you have to start from scratch every time – which is much less efficient over time. Consistency is the most underrated value in advertising.

You’ve mentored creatives who now lead departments globally. From a business perspective, how important is talent development and creative leadership in driving long-term agency and client success?

Talent development is a joy. And it is also the best way to prove that you can explain what you know, and that you understand what you are doing. Often I find myself understanding what we do better by having to explain it.

Has the industry become too comfortable celebrating “brilliant ideas” that win awards but avoid the harder question of whether they actually move business metrics at scale?

There is a strong correlation between awarded ideas and effectiveness. Over many studies it’s been proven to be at least 10x ROI over average work. The problem is that not everything can reach that standard. And also that not every great idea has sufficient investment behind it. We can only use awards as a guide. The real test is how people respond to them.

Do you think “ROI pressure” is genuinely limiting creativity today, or is it often used as an excuse for safer, less ambitious ideas?

Well the ROI pressure we should be facing is the pressure to get to the best ideas. Anything that prevents that is ultimately making something less effective than it could be.

Do you think most clients truly lack brave creative ambition, or have agencies made it too easy for clients to default to “safe” work by not clearly proving the business upside of bold ideas?

As this year’s Lion of St. Mark winner Susan Credle put it, “When you are trying to pursue creativity as an economic multiplier, partner with a client who believes in that. Then you’ll get there a lot faster.” In other words, the best situation is where clients and agency understand the power of great ideas and work together in doing the very difficult job of bringing them to life.

At what point does the responsibility for weak or underperforming creative work sit more with the client than the agency – especially when the client ultimately controls approval, budget, and risk appetite?

Again, it’s about partnership. In general, longer-term client-agency relationships lead to better work. And if a partnership is working then that work will appear soon enough. If expectations are not working for either side – or perhaps even for BOTH sides – then there will be trouble. So unless the client has no options, or the agency is in desperate need of the money, then the best thing to do is to look for alternative ways forward. Everyone will be happier in the end.

Get your delegate pass and be part of the festival where creativity comes alive.  Then submit your best work to the Golden Drum Competition before the 26 August 2026 entry deadline.
