At a time when the global conversation around climate change is increasingly focused on terrestrial ecosystems, the protection of oceans and coastlines often remains in the background. It is precisely this gap that SOS Oceano, an alliance of civil society organizations dedicated to preserving marine and coastal ecosystems in Brazil, seeks to address.
In this context, communication becomes a key tool. Not only for raising awareness, but for translating complex ecological relationships into messages that people can understand, feel, and remember. This role is taken on by the “Lifeless Flag” campaign, created by Droga5 São Paulo in collaboration with SOS Oceano.
The campaign was initially presented during Rio Ocean Week 2025, when the visual of the Brazilian flag was radically simplified by removing the blue and green colors. With the message: without the ocean, there is no life on land.
The second phase of the campaign further develops this concept and introduces a more layered visual approach. In collaboration with Black Madre Studio and Joules & Joules Laboratory, a series of six handcrafted screen-printed graphics was created using natural mineral pigments. Each piece combines marine and terrestrial species, from Amazonian flora to humpback whales, referencing the tradition of Brazilian naturalist illustration.

The central element remains the yellow diamond of the flag, now serving as a visual meeting point, a space where colors merge and symbolically point to the interdependence of ecosystems. As explained by Diego Limberti, Chief Design Officer at Droga5 São Paulo, the first phase demonstrated how design can condense a complex truth into a single powerful symbol, while the second phase reinterprets that symbol through the relationship between the ocean and the forest.
The choice of technique and materials further reinforces the meaning of the campaign. Screen printing allows precise control of color and layering, while introducing a handcrafted element that emphasizes the authenticity of the project. The use of natural pigments developed without synthetic solvents directly reflects the environmental values communicated by the campaign.
As highlighted by André Maciel, Creative Director at Black Madre Studio, the project is rooted in the fundamental logic of color theory. Blue and yellow create green, meaning that without blue there is no green, neither symbolically nor literally.
The campaign was developed with the support of WALK, an impact innovation hub within Droga5 São Paulo, which connects creativity, brand reputation, and social impact through its proprietary methodologies such as Index, Prisma, and Weighted Impact KPIs.
“Lifeless Flag” therefore functions not only as an awareness campaign, but as an example of how design, art, and strategy can collectively shape the perception of complex global issues. At a time when sustainability is increasingly becoming a communication cliché, this approach brings the focus back to understanding interconnection and responsibility within the system we all participate in.
