A meeting about the next meeting, a calendar with no free slots left, and a phone that never stops sending notifications. Sometimes, one look at your schedule is enough to turn a vacation from a future plan into a rather urgent necessity.

Southwest Airlines builds its new Enter Airplane Mode campaign, developed by agency GSD&M, around this familiar feeling. The idea is simple: the moment everyday obligations become unbearable might be exactly when we decide to book a trip. The agency plays on the expressions breaking point and booking point, turning the moment we reach our limit into the moment we make a reservation.

In a series of humorous spots, audiences encounter situations they would rather escape. In one, an employee is overwhelmed by meeting invitations, while in another, the daily commute on public transport becomes reason enough for a change of scenery. There is also an excessive true-crime podcast habit and a calendar that seems almost threatening. The escape from all these situations leads to an airplane seat.

The spots were directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon, with narration by Adam Scott, the actor known for his role in Severance, a series whose portrayal of working life is particularly relevant to the campaign’s theme.

Notifications as Currency for a Vacation

The campaign goes beyond advertising. Through the Notification Vacation activation, Southwest invites users to scan a QR code and upload a screenshot of their phone notifications. In return, they can earn between 500 and 10,000 Rapid Rewards points, subject to eligibility requirements and participation limits. A short burnout quiz is also available, offering users recommendations for their next destination and an opportunity to earn points.

Southwest also examined the relevance of this message through its own survey of 2,001 Americans. As many as 76% of respondents reported experiencing burnout, while 34% had not taken a trip lasting more than two days in over a year. At the same time, 68% believe that traveling is one of the few occasions when they truly feel in control of their time.

For Southwest, however, the campaign also serves a very concrete business objective. Enrollment in the Rapid Rewards program grew by 35% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year, and the program is approaching 100 million members. By turning everyday digital frustrations into travel rewards, the airline connects an emotionally relatable creative idea with stronger customer loyalty.

Enter Airplane Mode is the first campaign launched under Sabrina Callahan, Southwest Airlines’ new Chief Digital and Marketing Officer. Alongside creative agency GSD&M, the project involved Later, responsible for creator partnerships, and media agency Sparks Foundry.
