The Salvation Army introduces its thrift brand to a new generation with the launch of “Thrift Score,” the world’s first digital thrift store on Roblox. The organisation, which in 2023 helped nearly 24 million people overcome poverty, addiction and economic hardship through social services such as food assistance, shelter, disaster relief, rehabilitation and youth programmes, is using the platform to connect with younger audiences through digital culture, gaming and self-expression.
Developed by independent agency BarkleyOKRP, one of the largest independent advertising agencies in the U.S. in partnership with immersive game design studio The Gang, an award-winning specialist in interactive digital brand experiences, the project reimagines a Salvation Army thrift store as a fully explorable digital environment where players can browse thrift-inspired virtual items for their avatars.
For BarkleyOKRP, the project reflects shifting consumer discovery patterns. Tim McCracken, SVP Creative and AI at the agency, notes that younger audiences do not separate shopping, entertainment and social interaction in the same way previous generations did.
The virtual store features collaborations with creators and brands, player donations and digital replicas of real Salvation Army items. Players can explore racks, discover limited editions and access items designed to remain affordable across Roblox’s broad player base.
According to Lt. Colonel Mark Nelson, ARC Commander at The Salvation Army, thrifting has always been about more than affordability. “It’s about creativity, individuality and purpose. By bringing our thrift store into Roblox, we’re introducing a new generation to the spirit of thrifting in a way that fits how they explore, play and express themselves today.”
The experience is integrated into several popular Roblox environments, including Seaboard City and Daycare Party, effectively embedding the thrift concept within digital spaces where players already spend time rather than expecting them to seek out a standalone brand destination.
The platform also includes limited-edition UGC items donated by prominent Roblox creators such as @PrestonPlayz, @BriannaPlayz and @RussoPlays, each contributing interpretations of thrift-inspired digital fashion.
As Max Proctor, CEO of The Gang, noted, personalisation sits at the core of the Roblox experience, and the goal was to bring some of the surprise and discovery associated with real-life thrifting to the platform’s vast audience.
As in physical Salvation Army thrift stores, proceeds from “Thrift Score” support the organisation’s social programmes focused on rehabilitation, recovery and community assistance.
The Salvation Army’s digital thrift store is now live on Roblox. Players can search for “Thrift Score” at salvationarmythriftscore.com to explore the experience.
