Strategy magazine last year issued their 2016 Creative Report Card, which ranks the top brands, agencies and creatives in Canada, based on award wins in the previous year. The rankings are compiled by assigning scores to more than 1,500 awards won at regional, national and international advertising shows, with heavier weight given to the more prestigious international shows.
After a near-domination of awards shows in Canada and abroad in 2015, Procter & Gamble and its agency Leo Burnett top the brand and agency lists, respectively. The #1 ranking is predominantly attributed to the recognition the two companies received for the viral “#LikeAGirl” work created for P&G’s feminine hygiene brand Always. While the campaign was global, it was led from Toronto by Leo Burnett’s Canadian CEO and chief creative officer, Judy John, who also topped the creative directors list.
John was joined by her Leo Burnett colleagues Anthony Chelvanathan who topped the art director’s list, and Steve Persico who ranked as top copywriter, thanks to award-winning campaigns produced for clients such as Ikea, Raising the Roof and TD.
In addition to being published in the magazine’s Feb/March print issue, a digital component of the annual creative ranking provides a comprehensive overview of each company and individual on the lists, plus the award-winning campaigns that put them there. There, the names of companies and individuals in each list provide access to more information, previous year’s rankings, as well as news articles on some of the work that came out of Canada over the past year.
