The South Australian government has announced that advertisements for products high in fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) will be banned on public transport starting July 1, 2025. The new policy will apply to buses, trams, and trains, prohibiting advertisements for products classified as “unhealthy” according to national guidelines.
The Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) responded to the announcement on January 7, expressing concern about the potential impact on businesses. They emphasized the need for dialogue between the government and industry representatives to ensure that the implementation of the ban balances public health goals with the needs of the advertising sector.
Similar measures have already been implemented in numerous countries and cities, including London, where advertisements for HFSS products were banned on public transport in 2019.
