The HORUS awards for social responsibility and sustainable development have been granted since 2009 by IRDO – Institute for the Development of Social Responsibility. These awards recognize comprehensive approaches by legal entities and individuals in managing their environmental, social, and economic impact.
This year’s HORUS 2024 award winner is Mercator’s Little Chef of Slovenia project, now in its sixth consecutive season, created in collaboration with the television company Pro Plus. As the retailer with the widest network of stores across Slovenia, Mercator is deeply involved in the local community. This inspired the idea to motivate families and children to prepare meals together, highlight young culinary talents from across Slovenia, and connect them with their schools and local communities.
A significant part of the project focuses on cooking and showcasing the culinary skills of primary school students through a TV show format. Contestants’ cooking efforts help primary schools receive financial support donated by Mercator. These funds enable schools to implement exciting projects that bring joy to all students.
Over six seasons, the Little Chef of Slovenia has distributed €180,000 among 48 Slovenian primary schools, benefiting over 19,000 students.

Andreja Zadnik Andoljšek, Director of Marketing Communications at Mercator and the project leader from its inception, stated upon receiving the award:
“The HORUS 2024 award is a great recognition of the sustainable impact of the Little Chef of Slovenia. Following the project’s success at the Slovenian Advertising Festival, the Effie awards, the media award for an original TV format, and the Albert certificate for production standards promoting ecological awareness and sustainable practices in the television industry, this HORUS recognition further motivates us to inspire young people through the project toward responsible behavior, innovation, and sustainable thinking.”
The commission highlighted that the Little Chef of Slovenia is an outstanding show with significant potential in the areas of social responsibility, sustainable development, and youth engagement. It fosters community connections and builds a sense of belonging. It is an excellent project that addresses target groups most sensitive to change – children, and through them, their parents and families. The project is very well-described and implemented, with excellent measurable and detailed indicators, as well as exceptional recognition in Slovenia.
