Acting legend John Cleese returned to his iconic role of Basil Fawlty in the campaign for the British optical retail chain Specsavers, in which he recreated one of the most famous scenes of the Fawlty Towers. In the ad, which is part of the campaign Should Have Gone to Specsavers, Cleese, or better said Basil, attacks a police vehicle with a tree branch, thinking that it was his vehicle.
There’s also a behind-the-scenes video on YouTube with a short conversation with Cleese, who said that over the years he received a number of scenarios based on the series and the character of Basil, but this is the first for which he believed was genuinely funny.
Cleese also commented on the irritability of Basil’s character, warning that “there’s a bit of Basil in most people, if they’re sufficiently stressed.”
