Instagram has introduced a new content series aimed at helping parents engage in conversations they often put off.

Developed by the Meta-owned platform, the parent-teen initiative taps into a familiar insight: children are often more open during car rides, when conversations unfold side-by-side rather than face-to-face. Titled Carversations, the series reframes everyday drives as natural moments to ease into more sensitive discussions about navigating life, and growing up, online. The first episode stars Usher alongside his teenage sons and was developed by Meta’s content team in collaboration with its in-house creative partners.

“We launched Carversations to encourage parents to have honest, judgement-free conversations with their teens about how families use social media,” said Meta spokesperson Liza Crenshaw. “

The premiere episode explores how the family navigates Instagram together and how those interactions reshape their relationship. It touches on challenges familiar to many households, including tools that allow parents to monitor younger users’ activity and the constant negotiation around just how much time teens spend on the app.

Along the way, Usher reflects on the contrast between how his sons use social media today and his own early experiences in the music industry, when building a community meant something very different.

One recurring moment in the episode centres on a playful check of who actually sticks to their own screen-time limits. The sons also jokingly speculate about who might be on their father’s Close Friends list, while he turns the tables by asking how they would use his account if they had temporary access.

By reviving a long-abandoned family car game and reworking it as a conversation starter, the episode underlines the series’ wider point: discussions between parents and teens about social media don’t have to feel daunting when they unfold naturally, side by side, and without pressure. Additional episodes are on the way, with other celebrities and their children set to take part.
